Emergence

When a silk cocoon is reeled off, the very end of it cannot be reeled due to its unevenness. The fiber at this end has this characteristic because this is where the silk worm is first learning to do the job it was born to do. I felt a strong need to create a space to honor the first work and wove this double weave grid, placing the cocoons in each pocket as I wove. The result was a delicate series of chambers that needed an environment to protect them. After consulting with a wood craftsman, Clark Case, the housing was built, the chambers installed, and the frame gold leafed.

The arrangement of the grid is based on the Bagua. The Pattern of Life, where each number or square represents a different aspect of life. One: journey. Two: relationship. Three: elders. Four: fortune. Five: unity. Six: friends. Seven: creativity. Eight: contemplation. Nine: illumination.

The piece is named Emergence: First Work, because at some point in our lives, we all begin doing the work we were born to do. This piece represents my first work in doing what I was born to do.
