Biography

Lezlie King, Textile ArtistI trained as a weaver in Stockholm at Handarbetets Vänners Vävskola. A two hundred and fifty year old school committed to the preservation of traditional hand weaving techniques for making all varieties of textiles for the home and body. I returned to the US to study with Vegetal Dye Master, Michele Wipplinger and Master Japanese Doll Maker, John Marshall (Katazome artist) to develop my unique style in mixed media 2D and 3D art. Using only natural materials and following ancient natural dye procedures, my products are all 100% washfast & lightfast.

My techniques span a wide range from Traditional Japanese textile techniques including Katazome (stencil paste resist dyeing, including gold leaf), Kumihimo (braiding), Shifu (washable hand woven cloth made from 100% hand spun paper), Kushioshigasuri (warp painting), and Egatagasuri (stenciled paste resist on warp threads) to French Tapestry and traditional hand weaving techniques.

My design process always begins with some inspiration, either from nature or language. Once the essence or intent of my idea is determined, I transform the concept into an approach incorporating my techniques, integrate the necessary sub processes, and produce the artwork.

I have shown my work at the following national exhibitions, Fiber Celebration at the Lincoln Center in Fort Collins, CO where my entry won first place in the wearable category and American Textile Association exhibition for Convergence 2006, Grand Rapids, MI. My work has also been included in the Surface Design Journal Library Collection and will be on display at the Nordic Heritage Museum, Tapestry on Edge by the TAPS organization.
