Artist Statement
The play of color, its interaction with light, and my desire to express myself through pattern and shape, led me to choose a field that combined the exploration of these phenomena - textile artist.
As a textile artist, dyes are my means of playing with color. Trained in the use of both synthetic and natural/vegetal dyes, it is the natural dyes with their complete range of colorant that lends the most depth to my work. These colorants are extracted from plants, bugs, barks, roots, hard woods, and berries.
My canvas of choice is silk. It’s luster, strength and ability to be so many different textures keeps me engaged. The caramel color and roughed up texture of Tussah, the wild silk or the fine white sleek sheen of cultivated reeled silk play off each other bringing the highest interaction with light to every piece.
Using surface design techniques of Katazome, Shiburi, Egatagasuri, and Kushioshigasuri coupled with my strong base in structural weaving techniques I received through study in Stockholm, my work achieves unique and subtle characteristics allowing me maximum expression through pattern, shape, texture, and color.
